Catholic Review publishes movie review of ‘Klara and the Sun’

The science-fiction drama Klara and the Sun, directed by Taika Waititi and co-written by Dahvi Waller, explores themes of love, grief, and individual uniqueness. Based on the 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, the film is set in a mildly dystopian version of contemporary society.

The story follows Josie, a socially isolated teenager whose mother, Chrissie, intends to purchase an Artificial Friend to serve as a companion. Josie selects Klara, an outdated robot model, to be her companion. Designed to begin with the intellect of a toddler, Klara learns about life from Josie while witnessing the emotional tensions and health struggles within the family.

John Mulderig of the Catholic Review notes that the film offers a complex treatment of faith that requires careful discernment from adult viewers.
