Vincentian Conferences in Algarve meet to address poverty and social exclusion

Representatives from the Vincentian Conferences of the Diocese of Algarve met in Tavira on October 25 to mark 167 years of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul in Portugal. The diocesan general assembly brought together members from Tavira, Olhão, Almancil, Ferreiras, Albufeira, and Ferragudo at the Santa Luzia Pastoral Center.

Bishop Vitorino Soares told the assembly that the groups should move beyond immediate assistance to help transform the conditions that cause poverty and social exclusion. He described the identity of the Vincentians through three images: discreet hearts, closed eyes, and open arms. He noted that discreet hearts represent silent, organized service without seeking public recognition.

Fernanda Capitão, president of the national direction of the organization in Portugal, attended the meeting along with other national members. Bishop Soares encouraged members to consider how Jesus would act when facing difficulties in their daily service.
