Congregation of Notre Dame closes Marguerite-Bourgeoys Centre in Summerside, PEI

The Congregation of Notre Dame ended the mission of the Marguerite-Bourgeoys Centre in Summerside, P.E.I., on September 13, 2026. The leadership team of the Visitation province issued the announcement regarding the closure of the facility.

The center operated for 158 years, beginning in 1868. Originally known as St. Mary’s Convent, the sisters provided primary and secondary education to local students. In 1968, the congregation launched Head Start, a preschool program designed to prepare young children for public school. The sisters also provided daily music instruction in piano and singing.

Following the transition of public education to provincial jurisdiction, the center shifted its focus toward spiritual ministry. The facility was renamed the Marguerite-Bourgeoys Centre in 2003 to prioritize providing spaces for spiritual retreats and personal renewal.
