De las grandes peregrinaciones a la pobreza o El Niño: así es el Perú al que volverá León XIV

University of Piura professors held an online meeting on Tuesday to provide journalists with a briefing on the current conditions in Peru ahead of Pope Leo XIV's visit from November 11 to 16.

Marina Farías de Reyes noted that while a strong El Niño phenomenon is projected for Peru between 2026 and 2027, the Pope's visit is unlikely to be affected by heavy rains and flooding because the primary rainy season occurs between January and May. Farías de Reyes explained that northern Peru is vulnerable to flooding due to unplanned urban growth, flat terrain that lacks drainage, and modified river basins.

Farías de Reyes also stated that existing infrastructure is insufficient. She mentioned that the Pope has previous experience with these regional challenges from his time as Monsignor Prevost in Chiclayo, where he worked with Caritas to assist those affected by floods.
