A commission has completed a new Portuguese translation of the Bible

The commission responsible for the Portuguese translation of the Bible has finished its work, which began in 2012. The project now awaits a decision from the Portuguese Episcopal Conference and final ratification from the Holy See. Father Mário de Sousa, coordinator of the Bible Translation Commission for the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, stated that the text is intended to serve the liturgy and catechesis.

The commission plans to allow time for people to review the text available online and submit their opinions. A second phase will involve dialogue between biblical scholars and liturgists to improve the text for use in prayer. Father de Sousa noted that the project required teamwork to harmonize terms used by the various biblical scholars who integrated the project.
