In the Borders of France, Pope Leo XIV Breaks Down Religious Barriers

Pope Leo XIV addressed religious unity and human dignity during a meeting in Metz, France. Speaking in an auditorium named for Robert Schuman, the pope cited the European Union founder as an example of how people of different faiths can work toward common goals to transform divisions into bridges of hope.

The meeting held particular importance in the region, where the state recognizes Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, and Jewish communities. Pope Leo XIV stated that using God's name to justify violence or oppression is a desecration. He said religious discourse must call for the disarmament of hearts and words, noting that nothing undermining human dignity can be authentically inspired by God.

The pope concluded that the value of religions is proven by how they protect life and care for vulnerable people. He added that the greatness of a civilization depends on how it nurtures and protects the human person rather than its material achievements.
