First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV met with a delegation of 150 Special Olympics athletes at the Vatican on September 19. The group included Italian athletes who participated in the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin.

During the meeting, the pope spoke about the educational importance of sports and how they connect different people, cultures, and religions. He noted that sports require serious commitment and hard work, which results in qualities such as loyalty, trust, openness, team spirit, and courage.

The pope encouraged the athletes to live holy lives by following the example of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati. He described Frassati as a young sportsman who used the values of athletics to live a good and generous life.
