Pope Leo XIV tells UNESCO: "AI cannot answer questions about the meaning of life"

Pope Leo XIV told UNESCO on Friday that artificial intelligence cannot answer questions regarding the meaning of human life. Speaking at the organization's headquarters in Paris during his apostolic trip to France, the Pope addressed the relationship between technology, science, and human dignity.

The Pope warned that human ideas and relationships risk being impoverished through a process of dehumanization if technological development lacks a person-centered vision. He noted a paradox in society where artificial systems are attributed the name of the human faculty of thinking.

During his address, Leo XIV called for the protection of children and young people from digital era challenges. He urged that technology be used to support their growth, formation, relationships, freedom of thought, and discernment. This visit to Paris is part of a larger trip to France scheduled from September 25 to 28, which includes visits to Lourdes and Metz.
