Priest reflects on comedian's critique of parish behavior

Father Miguel Lopes Neto of the Diocese of Algarve addressed the national indignation following a comedian's sketch in which a host was broken before being given to a woman described as overweight and nearsighted. While some critics labeled the humorists religious illiterates, Father Lopes Neto suggested the satire serves as a mirror to the behavior of the faithful.

He noted that the humor observed how certain people receive preferential treatment in the parish, such as prominent figures receiving front seats or wider smiles, while others receive communion as if receiving change. Father Lopes Neto stated that the sketch reflected existing realities within the community.

The priest also commented on the perceived distance between the clergy and the people. He suggested that some priests present themselves as too fragile or distant to assist with practical matters like rent, evictions, or family issues.
