Vatican Journey to France

Pope Leo XIV celebrates Mass in Paris

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass before approximately 800,000 people at the Place de la Concorde in Paris on September 26, 2026. During his apostolic journey to France, the pope addressed the large crowd gathered in the city's largest public square, with participants lining the Champs Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe to the square.

In his homily, Pope Leo XIV described Jesus Christ as the source of living water capable of quenching the deepest human thirst for meaning, truth, and fulfillment. He urged the people of France to seek happiness and peace through Christ rather than through material possessions or temporary distractions. The pope encouraged families, young people, and the entire Christian community to share the Gospel in places experiencing loneliness or spiritual dryness.

The Mass included six altar servers with Down syndrome. Attendees waited for hours, sometimes in drizzling rain, to participate in the liturgy.
