Pope Leo XIV receives Special Olympics athletes at Vatican

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV received a delegation of Italian Special Olympics athletes at the Vatican on Sept. 19. The group consisted of athletes who participated in the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin.

The pope told the athletes that sports have great educational value because they teach noble and authentic values. He encouraged the group to live holy lives by following the example of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, whom he described as a young sportsman who translated athletic values into a generous and holy life.

The Special Olympics is an international organization that promotes sports for people with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 1968, the organization operates in more than 190 countries and includes approximately 5 million athletes worldwide.
