Pope Leo XIV to visit Lourdes

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV will visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes this weekend during a four-day apostolic journey to France. The visit to the pilgrimage site is scheduled for Saturday, September 26, following a Mass at Place de la Concorde in Paris.

The trip, which runs from September 25 to September 28, marks the first official papal state visit to France in 18 years. During the journey, the pope is scheduled to visit Paris, Saint-Denis, Lourdes, and Metz. His visit to the Elysée Palace includes a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron and addresses to civil society and the diplomatic corps.

The theme for the visit is "That the world may have life," taken from the Gospel of John. The pilgrimage site in Lourdes is known for the Grotto of Massabielle, where Bernadette Soubirous reported visions of the Virgin Mary in 1858. The sanctuary attracts millions of pilgrims annually, including many people with disabilities and illnesses.
