Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV has appointed two priests to serve as auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Madrid. Fernando Murga Gómez and Andrés Martínez Esteban will join existing auxiliary bishops Juan Antonio Martínez Camino and Vicente Martín.

Fernando Murga Gómez, who has served as the moderator of the Madrid archdiocesan Curia since 2025, has been assigned the titular see of Tasbalta. A priest of the Archdiocese of Madrid since 2011, Murga Gómez previously served as a parish priest and as the administrator of the Madrid diocesan seminary. He also worked as a technical coordinator for the Pope's 2026 apostolic journey to Spain.

Andrés Martínez Esteban, the current vicar general of the Ordinariate for Eastern Catholics in Spain-Madrid, has been assigned the titular see of Temuniana. Martínez Esteban holds a doctorate in theology from the Universidad Eclesiástica San Dámaso in Madrid.

The episcopal ordination for both men is scheduled for December 12 at the Almudena Cathedral.
