Pope Leo XIV celebrates Mass for Vatican Gendarmerie

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass for the Vatican Gendarmerie Corps on the afternoon of Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Lourdes Grotto in the Vatican Gardens. The celebration honored the corps' patron, Saint Michael the Archangel.

During the Mass, 15 members of the Gendarmerie took their oaths of service. In his homily, the Pope described the service of the Gendarmerie as a way to work in the Lord's vineyard, noting that they are entrusted with the care of buildings, entrances, and, most importantly, people.

Pope Leo XIV urged the officers to be trustworthy, discreet, and loyal. He stated that authority, according to the Gospel, is expressed through the ability to protect, listen to, and accompany others. He added that those who watch over others must maintain truth, justice, goodness, and respect within themselves.
