Pope Leo XIV to visit France

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV is visiting France from September 25 to 28, 2026, to address social and spiritual issues across three cities. During the four-day trip, the pope will visit UNESCO and speak on topics including immigration, artificial intelligence, and end-of-life questions.

Father Patrick Valdrini, a former rector of the Institut Catholique de Paris, said the visit provides an opportunity for the pope to advance his project of making the Church's social doctrine better known. This follows the impact of the pope's encyclical on artificial intelligence, *Magnifica Humanitas*, in France.

The visit comes as France remains highly secular, with data from 2019-2020 showing 51% of adults have no religious affiliation. However, journalist Cyprien Viet noted a recent openness to Catholicism following events such as the 2016 killing of Father Jacques Hamel and the 2019 fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, president of the French Bishops' Conference, described the journey as a remedy for the country's spiritual crisis.
