Pope Leo XIV leads General Audience on October 21, 2026, emphasizing marriage and family

Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of protecting marriage and family life during his general audience on October 21, 2026, in St. Peter's Square. This marked his first weekly audience since undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung. The pope, who returned to the Vatican on October 17 after four days at Gemelli hospital, thanked the faithful for their prayers during his recovery.

Reflecting on the Second Vatican Council's pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes, the pope described marriage as an intimate partnership of life and love rooted in mutual self-giving. He explained that while marriage includes a legal contract, its foundation is a conjugal covenant where spouses mutually bestow and accept one another. This union requires total fidelity and unbreakable oneness, which is expressed through the procreation and upbringing of children.

Pope Leo XIV noted that the well-being of individuals and Christian society is closely linked to the health of marriage and family communities. He urged those in social, political, and cultural leadership roles to collaborate effectively in promoting the family, which serves as a foundation of society. He added that authentic marital love involves more than physical attraction, requiring the entire will of the spouses to enliven their hearts.
