Pope Leo XIV leads Angelus prayer

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV led the Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace on Sunday, Oct. 18, marking his first public appearance since undergoing lung cancer surgery.

The pope returned to the Vatican following his discharge from Gemelli Hospital. He underwent surgery on Oct. 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. During the prayer, the pope thanked Catholics for their support and expressed gratitude to the medical staff at Gemelli Hospital. He noted that his experience has made him feel closer to those living with illness or infirmity and stated he will gradually resume his activities.

Reflecting on the Gospel passage regarding the tax, the pope said that in Jesus, people see a God who is not afraid of history but comes to dwell in it. He encouraged the faithful to be truthful and free from hypocrisy by fulfilling social duties without compromising their consciences.
