Pope Leo XIV meets Lutheran leaders

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV met with leaders of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) at the Vatican on October 1 to discuss ways for Catholics and Lutherans to jointly commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession in 2030.

Bishop Henrik Stubkjær, president of the LWF, led the delegation, which included vice presidents and staff from the Communion Office in Geneva. Stubkjær thanked the pope for his calls for disarmament and dialogue, and for the concerns raised in his encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, regarding the future of artificial intelligence.

Stubkjær noted that the relationship between the two traditions has progressed since the Joint Commemoration of the Reformation held ten years ago in Lund and Malmö with Pope Francis. He cited the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification as a source of ongoing ecumenical cooperation. The LWF is currently in the sixth phase of the International Lutheran-Catholic Commission on Unity, which has been active for 60 years.
