First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV honored Blessed Elżbieta Róża Czacka during a general audience on Wednesday, October 28. Addressing Polish pilgrims, the Pope referred to Czacka as the blind mother of the blind and noted her courage in accepting her disability.

The tribute follows the 150th anniversary of Czacka's birth on October 22, 2026. Born in 1876 to an aristocratic family, Czacka lost her sight following a fall from a horse and became completely blind by age 22. She traveled through Switzerland, Germany, and France to study methods for assisting the visually impaired before establishing various initiatives to help others with similar disabilities.
