Pope Leo XIV calls for mental health support

Pope Leo XIV has called for the Church to become an open home and a safe space that welcomes people facing mental health struggles without judgment. In his prayer intention for October, the Pope dedicated the month to mental health ministry, asking that this work be integrated throughout the Church to combat stigma and discrimination against those suffering from anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses.

The Pope's request also extends to those who care for others, including priests, religious men and women, and missionaries who face emotional fragility and pressure. This appeal follows research conducted in Brazil between 2022 and 2023 regarding the health of the clergy. The study, led by Passionist priest José Carlos Pereira, highlighted challenges such as stress, anxiety, and depression among priests. The research noted that while priests frequently listen to others, they often lack people to listen to them.
