Pope Leo XIV resumes work after lung surgery

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV has resumed his work and daily activities while recovering at Gemelli Hospital following lung surgery.

Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora reported Thursday that the Pope's postoperative recovery is progressing normally. A morning chest X-ray showed good recovery of the lung that underwent surgery. The medical team noted that the Pope is performing daily activities independently, including a physiotherapy session involving a full range of physical activities.

The Pope has returned to reading and writing. On Thursday afternoon, he met with Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, the Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State. Earlier that morning, the Pope concelebrated Mass in a specially prepared room on the hospital's 10th floor, following a similar Mass held on Wednesday afternoon.

The surgery, which took place on Tuesday, 13 October, involved the removal of the lower lobe of the Pope's right lung. Because his usual residence is undergoing renovations, the Pope is staying in dedicated rooms on the 10th floor of the hospital, which includes an organized chapel.
