Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV's doctors confirm no further treatment is necessary

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV requires no further medical treatment following his surgery for lung cancer, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office on October 21.

Doctors Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora reported that final histological examinations and molecular biology tests were completed on the tissue removed during the October 13 surgery. The results confirmed the tumor was a localized pulmonary adenocarcinoma. A subsequent oncological evaluation determined that no additional therapy is necessary.

The pope returned to the Vatican after being discharged from Gemelli Hospital on October 17. On October 21, he held his first general audience since the operation in St. Peter's Square.
