Pope Leo XIV asks Putin for humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV requested a humanitarian ceasefire in the city of Oleshky during a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking from Gemelli Hospital, the Pope asked for a truce in the Kherson region to allow for the delivery of food and medical supplies and to ensure the safe, voluntary evacuation of civilians.

This conversation marks the second phone call between the two leaders since June 4, 2025. During the call, the Pope expressed deep concern regarding the humanitarian situation in Oleshky and reaffirmed the Holy See's commitment to peace and dialogue.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin stated his hope that President Putin accepts the Pope's request. The call follows previous reports from Ukrainian churches regarding the critical situation in the occupied city.
