Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV leaves Gemelli Hospital

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV returned to the Vatican on Saturday afternoon, October 17, after being discharged from Gemelli University Hospital. Doctors cleared the pope for discharge following blood tests, a chest X-ray, and an evaluation of his clinical condition.

The pope's discharge comes four days after he underwent surgery on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung to treat adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer. While the Vatican had previously expected a seven-day hospital stay, his recovery progressed quickly, allowing him to return to his papal apartments ahead of schedule.

Before leaving the hospital, the pope spoke with Varvara, a 13-year-old Ukrainian girl who had previously met him in St. Peter's Square while undergoing cancer treatment. Using a Ukrainian priest as a translator, Varvara told the pope that an embrace he gave her in December provided her with the strength to overcome her illness. She presented him with a handmade felt toy and a photograph of their previous meeting.

The pope is scheduled to lead the Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace on Sunday, October 18.
