Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV to leave hospital

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV returned to the Vatican on the afternoon of Saturday, October 17, after being discharged from Gemelli Hospital. Doctors cleared the pope to leave following blood tests and a chest X-ray that showed his postoperative recovery was progressing normally.

The pope underwent surgery on October 13 to remove a lung nodule, which doctors later confirmed was lung adenocarcinoma. Upon his discharge, the pope thanked surgeon Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the medical and nursing staff, and Elena Beccalli, the rector of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.

The pope is scheduled to lead the Angelus prayer from his apartment at the Apostolic Palace on Sunday, October 18.
