Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV to leave hospital Saturday

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV will leave Gemelli Hospital on Saturday afternoon to return to the Vatican following successful lung surgery. The Vatican announced that the pope will celebrate Mass at the hospital on Saturday before his discharge and will lead the Angelus prayer from the Apostolic Palace on Sunday.

Personal physician Dr. Luigi Carbone and surgeon Dr. Stefano Margaritora stated that blood tests and a chest X-ray performed Friday morning showed the pope is fit for discharge. The pope underwent surgery on October 13 to remove a lung nodule, which doctors later confirmed was lung adenocarcinoma.

The Vatican has reported that the pope's postoperative recovery is progressing normally. Since the surgery, the pope has celebrated Mass in a makeshift chapel on the 10th floor of the hospital.
