Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV to undergo surgery for lung nodule

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV will undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule at Gemelli Hospital in Rome. During the Angelus prayer on Sunday, October 11, the pope told the crowd in St. Peter's Square that doctors discovered the nodule during recent medical checkups. He described the nodule as well-positioned and in a very early stage.

Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican Press Office, stated the surgery was scheduled for the early part of the following week. The pope asked the faithful for their prayers following the announcement.

Cardinals of the Curia praised the pope for personally sharing his health news, describing the disclosure as an unprecedented gesture of transparency, humility, and trust. Historically, the Vatican has been more reserved regarding the health of popes, such as when Pope John Paul II announced a hospital stay in 1992 without immediately specifying the reason.
