Pope Leo XIV undergoes lung surgery

Pope Leo XIV is recovering at the Agostino Gemelli after surgeons removed a lung tumor on Tuesday afternoon. The Holy See Press Office reported that the Pope had a quiet night following the procedure.

A surgical team led by Professor Stefano Margaritora performed a video-assisted surgery to remove the lower lobe of the Pope's right lung. The surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes and was described as a successful procedure without complications. An immediate histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, which had been suspected during preoperative testing.

The Pope had previously mentioned a localized nodule following his Angelus address on Sunday, October 11, but the Vatican had not previously specified if the lesion was benign or malignant. The Holy See Press Office has not yet released details regarding the stage of the tumor.
