Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV undergoes surgery

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on October 13 to remove a lung nodule, a procedure that confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. The Holy See reported that the 90-minute video-assisted surgery to remove the lower lobe of the right lung was successful and without complications.

Following the procedure, the pope woke up normally and returned to his room at Hospital Gemelli. Professor Stefano Margaritora, the surgeon who performed the operation, described the pope as an ideal patient and noted that he requires approximately ten days for a full recovery. Margaritora also stated there is no clinical reason to cancel the pope's upcoming trip to South America.

The diagnosis of adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer, was established through histological examination of the tissue removed during the operation. Bishop Barry C. Knestout of the Diocese of Richmond expressed gratitude for the successful surgery and the medical team's care while joining others in prayer for the pope's recovery.
