Pope Leo XIV says safety concerns about AI should be taken seriously

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV said safety concerns regarding artificial intelligence should be taken seriously. The Pope's comments come as President Donald Trump pushes for the rapid development of AI and data centers.

In his first encyclical, Magnifica humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence, the Pope addresses the technology. This follows a September 29 agreement between Trump and tech executives to establish voluntary safety standards, which includes allowing independent auditors to assess AI technology. Trump also signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use the term "superintelligence" for AI.

The push for AI development occurs as polling shows public hesitation. An October 1 poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 31% of U.S. adults approve of how Trump is handling AI.
