Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV to undergo surgery

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on Tuesday, October 13, to remove a lung nodule at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, stated the hospitalization was scheduled for late morning.

The nodule was discovered during routine medical examinations. During an Angelus address on Sunday, October 11, the 71-year-old pope explained that the nodule was well-localized and identified at a very early stage. He noted that he decided to undergo the procedure following the advice of his doctors.

All papal audiences are canceled through October 20 due to the hospitalization. While the surgery was performed to remove part of the right lung, the Vatican has not specified if further treatment is expected. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, noted the serenity with which the pope announced the procedure.
