Briefing and sources: Pope Leo XIV undergoes successful thoracic surgery. Holy See Press Office
First report
Pope Leo XIV underwent successful thoracic surgery to remove a portion of his lung, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office.
Dr. Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora reported that the Pope underwent a scheduled video-assisted procedure to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. An in situ histological examination confirmed a diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, which doctors had suspected during preoperative exams.
The surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes, though the Pope remained in the operating room for about 3 hours. The Holy See Press Office stated the procedure was successful without complications. After waking up normally and undergoing a brief observation period, the Pope returned to his room on the 10th floor.
Stefano Margaritora led the surgical team, which included Elisa Meacci, María Teresa Congedo, and Leonardo Petracca Ciavarella. Massimo Antonelli, Giovanni Punzo, and Giuseppe Bello served on the anesthesiology team.

First report
Pope Leo XIV met with members of the Circolo San Pietro in the Vatican Apostolic Palace on October 12, 2026. This meeting marked the first time the Pope received the association in audience.
The Pope thanked the group for its work in Rome since 1869, noting that the association provides daily meals, night shelters for the homeless, and housing for families in difficulty. He described their service as a way for the Church to witness to the Gospel among the poor.
During his address, the Pope linked the association's three pillars of prayer, action, and sacrifice through the concept of charity. He stated that prayer serves as the foundation of charity by establishing the relationship through which members receive the ability to give to others.

Briefing and sources: Zamboanga archbishop urges voters to reject political dynasties. CBCP News
First report
Archbishop Julius Tonel of Zamboanga urged voters to reject political dynasties during a religious feast on Oct. 12. Addressing devotees at the Fort Pilar Shrine in Zamboanga City, Tonel linked concentrated political power to corruption and poverty.
The vice president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines told the crowd that political dynasties represent a moral and ethical concern rather than just a political issue. He stated that corruption worsens poverty by undermining public services such as education, health care, and infrastructure. Tonel encouraged Filipinos to hold officials accountable and support laws that ban political dynasties.
Tonel also endorsed the “Dapat Isa Lang” people’s initiative. He asked parishes to assist Catholics, especially senior citizens and those without internet access, in participating in the initiative's online signature campaign. He said the Christian faith requires people to participate in public affairs to care for the country and the common good.

Briefing and sources: Tuesday October 13th: Character Not Appearance. Diocese of Port of Spain
First report
The Diocese of Port of Spain shared a reflection on the Gospel of Luke for Tuesday, October 13, focusing on the importance of character over outward appearance.
The reflection notes that people often judge others based on wealth, taste, and clothing style rather than their true nature. It observes that even in eulogies, people frequently highlight academic achievements instead of how the deceased treated others.
Drawing from the Gospel passage where a Pharisee expresses surprise that a guest did not wash before a meal, the Diocese states that Jesus commands people to love their neighbors as themselves. The text concludes that individuals will be judged on how they treated others rather than their academic success or physical appearance.

Briefing and sources: Faith In The Home: Guardian Angels. Diocese of East Anglia
First report
Dr. Antonia Braithwaite, the Marriage and Family Life Coordinator for the Diocese of East Anglia, wrote an article to help children understand the role of guardian angels. The text explains that these angels serve as lifelong companions assigned by God to protect children from harm, assist them in making good decisions, and guide them toward God.
The article suggests that children can talk to their guardian angels through prayer whenever they feel lonely, afraid, or tempted. Braithwaite recommends using the traditional prayer, Angel of God, to help children build this relationship. The Church celebrates the feast of guardian angels on 2 October.
