Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV to be hospitalized Oct. 13 for lung surgery

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome late Tuesday morning, October 13, to undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule. The Holy See Press Office announced the hospitalization on Monday, following the pope's Sunday Angelus address where he explained that doctors recommended the procedure after finding the nodule during a routine medical checkup.

The hospitalization has suspended all public and private audiences until October 20. The pope will also miss several scheduled events, including an awards ceremony in Castel Gandolfo, an address to an infertility conference, and a meeting with bishops from Nicaragua.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside instead of the pope at the October 14 Mass in St. Peter’s Square to close a meeting marking the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia. The pope was also scheduled to deliver the summit's closing address but will no longer attend. Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, stated the pope is expected to remain hospitalized for approximately one week to recover.
