Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV undergoes lung surgery

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV arrived at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule. A medical team specializing in thoracic surgery, led by Professor Stefano Margarito, is scheduled to perform the procedure during the afternoon.

The Vatican disclosed on Oct. 11 that a scan had detected a well-contained lung nodule at an early stage. The expected week-long hospitalization has caused the cancellation of several papal appearances, including meetings, addresses, ceremonies, and a Mass in St. Peter's Square.

Medical experts consulted by OSV News noted that lung nodules are common and often benign, though they require intervention to rule out cancer. Depending on the recovery period required after the operation, the surgery may affect the pope's planned apostolic visit to Latin America from Nov. 6 to 17.
