Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV to undergo surgery at Gemelli Hospital

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV arrived at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Tuesday afternoon, October 13, to undergo surgery to remove a small, localized lung nodule. The Holy See Press Office reported that the Pope was admitted late in the morning and was scheduled for the operation in the afternoon.

A thoracic medical team led by Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the hospital's director of thoracic surgery and head of the neuroscience and chest department, will perform the procedure. The Pope previously announced the surgery following the Angelus on October 11, explaining that the nodule was detected during routine medical reviews and was found at a very early stage.

The hospitalization has led to changes in the Pope's schedule. He will not participate in afternoon sessions for a meeting regarding *Amoris laetitia* at the Paul VI Hall, and all scheduled audiences through October 20 have been canceled. The Pope is expected to remain in the hospital for approximately one week following the surgery.
