Pope Leo XIV admitted to Gemelli Hospital for lung surgery

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Oct. 13 to undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule. The 71-year-old pope arrived at the hospital by car at approximately 1 p.m. and is scheduled for the operation in the afternoon. Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the hospital's chief thoracic surgeon, will lead the surgical team.

The Vatican stated the nodule was detected at an early stage during routine medical tests. Because the hospital's dedicated papal emergency suite on the 10th floor is undergoing renovations, the pope will stay in a nearby room. He is expected to remain at the hospital for one week of recovery.

The Vatican has canceled all scheduled papal audiences through Oct. 20. This is the first medical event during the pope's 17-month papacy.
