Bishops pray for Pope Leo XIV

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Bishops and religious leaders in the United States, Canada, and England are praying for Pope Leo XIV following his diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. The Holy See announced Oct. 13 that doctors at Gemelli Hospital successfully removed a cancerous tumor from the lower lobe of the pope's right lung.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops urged the faithful to pray for the pope's recovery and his medical team. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the conference, asked people to pray for the surgeons. In Chicago, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich expressed optimism regarding the skill of the physicians and asked those in the pope's hometown to pray for his wellness.

In England, Archbishop Richard Moth, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, encouraged prayer in homes and parishes. Bishop Peter Collins of the Diocese of East Anglia also called for diocesan prayer, noting that the pope's scheduled visit to three South American countries appears to still proceed.

The Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops sent a letter to the pope to assure him of the prayers of Canadian bishops and faithful. In the United States, the Archdiocese of New York and Bishop Robert E. Barron of Winona-Rochester also requested prayers for the restoration of the pope's health.
