Pope Leo XIV undergoes surgery

Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on Oct. 13 to remove a lung nodule. During the procedure, doctors confirmed a diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma. A surgical team led by Stefano Margaritora performed a 90-minute video-assisted lobectomy to remove the lower lobe of the pope's right lung.

The surgery concluded without complications, and the pope returned to his hospital room after waking normally. The Vatican expects his recovery to take at least one week, and all of his appointments are canceled through Oct. 20. His upcoming trip to South America, scheduled for November, may be affected by his recovery and further medical results.

The diagnosis was confirmed through intraoperative tissue analysis. While the immediate surgical outcome was favorable, doctors must wait for definitive pathology reports to determine if the pope requires additional treatment.
