OSV News publishes article on Church teaching about the devil

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

OSV News published an article by Carl E. Olson regarding Catholic teaching and Scripture on the nature of the devil.

The article notes that the Catechism of the Catholic Church identifies Satan as a fallen angel and a creature of pure spirit. According to the Catechism, the devil was originally a good angel created by God but became evil through his own actions. While the devil possesses significant power as a spirit, the Catechism teaches he is not infinite and cannot prevent the establishment of God's reign.

The report also references writings by Blessed Fulton J. Sheen from his book, Life of Christ. Sheen observed that many people today do not believe in the devil, suggesting that the devil benefits from such disbelief. The article cites the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 to support the teaching that demons were created naturally good by God before becoming evil.
