Pope Leo XIV resumes catechesis on Gaudium et Spes

Pope Leo XIV resumed his catechesis on the Second Vatican Council during a general audience in St. Peter’s Square on Oct. 7, focusing on the pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes. After a pause for his apostolic journey to France, the pope turned his attention to the first part of the document, specifically Chapter 4, which addresses the mission of the Church in the contemporary world.

The pope stated that the Church is not positioned above or beside the world, but is planted within it. He explained that the Church's primary mission is to help people address profound life questions regarding human origins, destiny, and the meaning of love and suffering. While the Church contributes to building the earthly city, Leo XIV noted that its commitment is not primarily political, but is expressed through witness to faith, love, justice, peace, and brotherhood.

Leo XIV urged Christians, particularly priests and theologians, to discern what elements of modern culture are worthy of consideration by using the word of God and Church tradition as supreme criteria. He warned that Christianity cannot be made more attractive by softening its demands or watering down its message. He also emphasized that believers cannot accept the oppression of the weak or the injustice faced by the poor.
