Pope Leo XIV urges canon law students to seek supernatural good of persons

First source report

Pope Leo XIV told students and members of the Faculty of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University to pursue the supernatural good of persons. Speaking at an international congress marking the 150th anniversary of the faculty, the Pope said studies should be conducted in light of the mystery of the Church.

The Pope stated that canon law must serve the spiritual good of individuals and build up the community of the Church. He said true justice cannot be separated from truth and mercy. He also noted that the law should help create order while seeking the supernatural good of every faithful person and strengthening ecclesial communion.

The Pope emphasized that the goal of training in this field is not merely knowing the law, but developing an ecclesial sense of what is just. He also noted the faculty's role in serving the papacy through fidelity to Church teaching and service to the Holy See.
