Pope Leo XIV will not require additional cancer treatment following his surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office.
Doctors Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora reported that histological examinations and molecular biology tests on the tissue removed during the October 13 surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital confirmed the tumor was a localized lung adenocarcinoma. An oncological assessment determined that no further therapy is necessary.
The pope returned to the Vatican after being discharged from the hospital on October 17. He held his first general audience since the operation on October 21. While his recovery is progressing well, doctors advised against a planned helicopter trip to Assisi on October 27 for an interreligious peace gathering. The cancellation was a precaution due to the recent surgery.
