Thai diocese strengthens lay role in social ministry after 50 years of Caritas work
First source report
The Diocese of Chanthaburi marked the 50th anniversary of its Social Development Center, Caritas Chanthaburi, with a gathering in Sa Kaeo Province on Oct. 24. Bishop Philip Adisak Phorn-ngam presided over the Mass, which included clergy, religious sisters, and lay Catholics.
The event included a panel discussion on serving vulnerable communities. Apinya Thajit, deputy director of the Stella Maris Seafarers’ Center in Thailand, spoke to the assembly about her work with migrant workers, fishers, and exploited seafarers in the Gulf of Thailand. She encouraged participants to recognize the human dignity of those in difficult circumstances.
During the gathering, local parishes distributed food while information booths offered health screenings, counseling, traditional Thai massage, and information regarding anti-trafficking efforts. Students from Darasamutr Schools in Sa Kaeo and Aranyaprathet, along with seminarians and youth volunteers, assisted with the event.
