Father James Mallon, author of Divine Renovation, stated that parish mission and diaconia are inseparable. In an interview with Vastenactie, Mallon addressed concerns that focusing on evangelization might reduce attention to the poor, the vulnerable, and justice.
Mallon argued that the Church does not have to choose between proclaiming the faith and social service. He said that when people encounter Christ and live as his disciples, a desire to serve others follows naturally. He described diaconia not as an additional task for a missionary parish, but as a fruit of living faith.
Drawing on experiences from his own parish, Mallon noted that missionary renewal can lead to new ways of serving, such as supporting food banks and the homeless or increasing broader social involvement. He said a healthy parish does not remain inward looking but reaches out into society.

Harry Notermans reflected on the history of the Sint Anna congregation and the impact of religious orders in Limburg during a column. He noted that a walking theater performance during Open Monumentendag in Heel illustrated how religious communities contributed to healthcare, education, and social work in the region.
The reflection highlighted the work of Peter Joseph Savelberg, who was appointed chaplain in Heerlen. Savelberg founded the congregations of the Kleine Zusters van de Heilige Joseph and the Broeders van Sint Joseph to assist families in poverty, the sick, and the lonely. Notermans observed that the activities of these congregations extended well beyond the mining areas of South Limburg.

The Contactraad voor Interreligieuze Dialoog (CID) of the Rooms-Katholieke Kerkprovincie in Nederland met with the Islamitische Stichting Nederland / Hollanda Diyanet Vakfi (ISN) at the ISN headquarters in Den Haag on 14 October 2026. The meeting was part of a series of meetings between the ISN and the CID.
Tolga Cetinkaya, imam and voorzitter of ISN jongeren, led the session on the value of faith in current society. He noted that mobile phone use and the pressures of a performance society make it difficult to connect young people to the mosque, though some young people seek Islam to fill a spiritual void.
Bishop Herman Woorts, the referent for interreligious dialogue for the Bisschoppenconferentie, noted that while fewer parents are having their children baptized, more young people and adults are joining the Church. He stated that these new believers often seek connection through values and rituals, which brings the question of how to provide them with good guidance.
