Pope Leo XIV affirms need for media to cover public figures

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV told journalists on Friday that media coverage of public figures is important while traveling to France for a four-day visit. Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane, the pope responded to reports regarding the Trump administration's attempts to bar certain U.S. media outlets from the White House.

The pope told a CNN reporter that journalists are welcome on his plane and expressed satisfaction that they are welcome in his presence. He stated that good media coverage is necessary for everyone.

During his papacy, Leo XIV has advocated for a free and independent press. During one of his first audiences as pope, he called for the release of imprisoned journalists and described free speech and the press as a precious gift.
