Bishop Frank J. Caggiano opens Gillis Literacy Center at Kolbe Cathedral

Bishop Frank J. Caggiano opened the Gillis Literacy Center at Kolbe Cathedral Preparatory School on October 30. The center is the first of five literacy spaces planned for the Diocese of Bridgeport.

The center was established through a $6.3 million gift from Dr. Margie Gillis and Chip Gillis. This donation supports a five-year initiative to provide reading assistance to more than 1,000 Catholic school students in Bridgeport.

Steven Velardo, president of Foundations in Education, stated that the center provides personalized one-on-one intervention for students. The initiative also provides coaching and support for teachers. Stacie Stueber, the diocesan superintendent of schools, noted that the center provides the individualized resources requested by teachers and principals.
