Hundreds of people gathered at the Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral on Saturday, October 17, to pray for the health of Pope Leo XIV. Apostolic Nuncio to Chile Mons. Kurian Mathew Vayalunkal presided over the midday Mass, where he encouraged the congregation to continue supporting the Pope through prayer.

The Holy See reported that the Pope was discharged from the hospital on Saturday to return to the Vatican following his recovery. On Friday, October 16, medical examinations confirmed his health was improving. The Pope previously underwent surgery on Tuesday, October 13, at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after doctors detected an early stage pulmonary adenocarcinoma. He has since undergone respiratory physiotherapy and can now perform daily activities independently.
