Especialistas católicos en cáncer de pulmón analizan el diagnóstico del Papa León XIV

Catholic medical specialists analyzed the lung cancer diagnosis of Pope Leo XIV following his surgery on October 13. During an appearance on EWTN News Nightly on October 14, pulmonologist Dr. Jeff McGovern and American Lung Association spokesperson Dr. Juanita Mora discussed the Holy Father's health and potential treatment paths.

The surgery involved removing the lower lobe of the Pope's right lung and confirmed a diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Dr. McGovern, a member of the Catholic Medical Association, noted that this is the most common type of lung cancer in both smokers and non-smokers.

Future treatment options, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiotherapy, will depend on the results of an anatomopathological study. This study will determine the stage of the cancer and whether it is localized or has spread. Dr. McGovern stated that while these results typically take several days, the results for the Pope may be available sooner than usual. If the cancer is localized, the best-case scenario involves a CT scan every six months, moving to once a year after two or three years.
