Pope Leo XIV underwent scheduled thoracic surgery this afternoon to remove the lower lobe of his right lung using video-assisted techniques. According to a Holy See Press Office statement from Luigi Carbone and Stefano Margaritora, an immediate histological exam confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma.

The surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes, though the Pope remained in the operating room for about 3 hours. The procedure was successful without complications. Following a brief observation period, the Pope woke up normally and returned to his room on the 10th floor.

Stefano Margaritora led the surgical team, which included Elisa Meacci, Maria Teresa Congedo, and Leonardo Petracca Caravella. The anesthesiology team consisted of Massimo Antonelli, Giovanni Punzo, and Giuseppe Bello.
