Pope Leo XIV inspires Rome conference on mental health ministry

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Clergy, pastoral workers, and mental health professionals met in Rome on October 9 and 10 to discuss overcoming the stigma surrounding mental health within the Church. The conference, titled “A Healing Presence: The Church’s Call to Mental Health Ministry,” was organized by the International Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers and held under the patronage of the Pontifical Academy for Life. The event coincided with World Mental Health Day and responded to Pope Leo XIV’s October prayer intention regarding mental health.

Participants included Bishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and Bishop John Dolan of Phoenix. Deacon Ed Shoener, a founding member of the International Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers, stated that the Church serves as a safe space for spiritual and social support rather than a replacement for medical professionals. Shoener noted that the ministry aims to complement psychologists and psychiatrists by providing the support often missing due to fear and discrimination.
